We have released a new version of Digital Media Converter that gives direct conversion to MPEG 4 for iPod. You can convert videos from any format to the iPod format. Digital Media Converter also lets you transfer files to your iTunes playlist so that you can easily synchronize these files with your iPod. Digital Media Converter can also convert VOB files (DVD files) so that it plays on the iPod. The new version also supports batch-converting your audio files to the MP3 format, which you can transfer to your iPod. You can read the following article that describes step-by-step directions on how to convert your video files to the iPod format: https://www.deskshare.com/resources/articles/dmc_converting_files_for_iPod.aspx

If you are converting from very high definition videos like DVR-MS HD or WMV HD then you will lose some quality. Going from a high definition to any video format is considered a downgrade. MPEG 1 is considered a downgrade. Even MPEG 2 is considered downgrade when the source file is a HD. MPEG 2 is still considered the highest resolution standard format for DVD playback. Other formats such as compressed AVIs are also downgrades. The quality of AVI depends mostly on the compressor used. DivX encoded AVIs generally have the highest compression for large videos. However, you have to expect some loss in quality. The trial version is only limited by a brand it adds to all converted videos. The trial version does not affect the video quality.

Digital Media Converter is a batch conversion tool. You can take a group of files and convert them to a specified format. You can also setup a schedule when Digital Media Converter will start converting the files automatically. For more information, refer to Digital Media Converters User Guide. The User Guide is also available online at: https://www.deskshare.com/help/dmc/Index.aspx

A standard MPEG 2 video that you can write to a DVD disk in NTSC is 720 x 480 pixels and 720 x 576 pixels in PAL. When you try to convert a 704 x 480 pixels video to these DVD video formats, Digital Media Converter will stretch the video to fit the DVD video dimension. Hence, the video will appear stretched or narrow. The DVD aspect ratio (4:3, 16:9 and 2.21:1) changes the Display Aspect Ratio of the video. The width and height of the actual MPEG 2 video is either 720 x 480 pixels or 720 x 576 pixels depending on the picture standard. The Display Aspect Ratio instructs the DVD player about the dimension in which the file should be played. Since the aspect ratio of 704 x 480 pixels is nearest to 2.21:1 aspect ratio, you are able to view the video best in 2.21:1.

A DVD burning software will subject the DVD format file (MPEG 2) produced by Digital Media Converter to a compression process before actually writing the file to the DVD. A DVD format file will fit in the DVD disk if: The DVD format file is in standard MPEG 2 NTSC or PAL The duration (not the size) of the DVD format file is less than that the DVD disk can hold Note: When burning to a DVD disk, make sure that you select "DVD video" and not data DVD. DVD videos are the underlying read format for a DVD player.

A standard NTSC DVD video is 720 x 480 pixels (width and height), while a standard PAL DVD video is 720 x 576 pixels. Since a PAL DVD video's height is more than that of NTSC DVD video, the aspect ratio of the source video is lost. Moreover, because the video has to be resized, some loss in quality is expected. When using the DivX or XviD video compressor for converting to AVI, you might get inverted videos. This is a problem related to the compressor. You can use Digital Media Converter's Effects feature to flip the video to correct the inversion.

Digital Media Converter can auto-select both video and audio compressors based on "Best Quality", "High Compression" and "Most Compatible". Use the auto-select feature to let Digital Media Converter select an appropriate video and audio compressor. You can then change the video compressor to DivX. To auto-select: On the Tools menu, select Settings. From the Convert to Format drop-down, select AVI. Select the Properties tab From the Auto select settings (for compression) based on drop-down, select "Best Quality", "High Compression" or "Most Compatible" depending on your requirement. If you do not see the Auto select options then make sure that you are using the latest version of Digital Media Converter. Two things that significantly affect the size of the video are: Video and audio compressor Dimension (Width and Height) of the video For web publishing, we recommend you to use the MPEG 4 Video compressor when you convert to QuickTime MOV. Furthermore, you can reduce the video dimension to produce smaller video files. A good dimension to choose for web publishing is 320 x 240 pixels.

Digital Media Converter supports many compressors and each compressor has its own set of properties that may result in varying video quality. In our tests, we have found the following settings that will improve the quality. Use the Indeo or Cinepak video compressors. They offer the best quality Reduce the Key Frame Rate to 8 frames or lower for better AVI seeking Keep the Frame Rate as close as possible to the original video's frame rate Keep the AVI video dimension same as the original video Increase the quality setting to between 80% and 90% Select uncompressed audio

The best format for playing on Pocket PC is WMV and if you want to output a 640 x 480 pixel video then we recommend you to WMV - For Desktop Viewing as the Convert To format. On the Properties tab, select "DVD quality video (1 Mbps CBR)" as the video profile and "High definition quality audio (CBR)" as the audio profile.

DV-AVI files are generally very large in size. We found that Adobe Premier Pro has a problem with file size greater than 2GB. One solution is to convert your file to a different format such as (normal) AVI using a video compressor like Cinepak Codec and Uncompressed for Audio. The other option is to use Video Edit Magic, which is published by DeskShare. Video Edit Magic can handle DV-AVI file of sizes greater than 2GB. You can download a trial version of Video Edit Magic from the link: https://www.deskshare.com/vem.aspx

Converting MPEG 2 file to AVI creates a file with large dimensions. In this case, selecting the correct AVI compressor becomes crucial. We found that Cinepak video compressor and Uncompressed audio gives the best results. Newer or faster PCs generally do not show any noticeable synchronization problems in the output AVI file. This problem only occurs when playing AVI files on slower machines.

The standard DVD holds exactly 120 minutes requiring 4.7GB. This is the most compatible format. Digital Media Converter currently does not support squeezing more time on a standard DVD. In future versions, we are planning to support longer playing modes for DVDs.
