What's the difference between Active and Passive FTP connection?

One of my friends suggested your FTP software for downloading video files from a FTP server. I have a few questions before I start using the software. What are Passive and Active modes for FTP connection? What is difference between them?

Selecting between the Active or Passive mode connection depends on the FTP server to which you are trying to connect. In most cases, Passive mode will work correctly. In Auto FTP Manager, while adding or editing the profile, uncheck the ‘Use Passive Mode’ option if you are not able to connect to an FTP server.
